We provide structural design for all types of buildings and structures, balancing efficiency with flair and imagination and follow that up with a prompt and reliable SER certification service.
We don’t want the engineer’s drawings and certificate to be the thing that holds your development up and we deliver when we say we do. Sometimes we need information from other people like glazing or timber roof suppliers. We can’t control when we receive it but we make sure that it absolutely clear what is required so when we receive it it’s turned around quickly.
We are a small but highly professional and client focused practice. We appreciate that your development might be the biggest investment you have ever made and if it’s your home it’s your castle. Every project is treated with the same thorough, careful and focused approach from start to finish.
We don’t want the engineer’s drawings and certificate to be the thing that delays your development. For small projects (up to 200sqm) we typically provide structural details for co-ordination within two weeks of receiving plans from your architect. After that, we typically provide Engineer’s drawings and SER certificate within two weeks of receiving your architect’s approved building warrant plans. For larger projects we can work with you, your project manager or your architect to make sure the engineering design and certification dovetails into the project programme.
We provide fabricators and contractors with design of steelwork, reinforced concrete and curtain walling to support SER applications. As certifiers we understand the process and what other certifiers expect and need to see.
The Structural Engineer’s Registration (SER) scheme holds a register of approved structural engineers and bodies (firms) who can provide a certificate to a local authority to support a building warrant application. The certificate is confirmation from the certifier to the local authority that the structural design shown on the accompanying structural drawings and specification complies with the requirements of building regulations.
Approved certifiers and bodies are audited regularly to ensure that building standards the strict code of practice set out by the SER scheme are being observed, maintained and upheld.
The SER certificate only covers the structural part of building design (foundations, beams, walls, roofs etc). Other parts of the application (Energy, Fire, Safety, Noise, Environment and Sustainability) are managed by other designers -often an architect.
Always seek professional advice before undertaking any kind of building work. For example - taking down a non -load bearing wall might not have any structural implication but it might breach others regulations like fire or environment. Contact us here if you are planning a development and looking for some advice.
The building warrant process for a typical domestic scheme may look like this:
After planning permission has been granted, your architect develops the technical elements of the scheme to your brief
Glasgow Structural undertakes the necessary soil and site investigations and surveys
Glasgow Structural co -ordinates with your architect and provides structural design information to support development of the scheme
Building warrant application is made by the architect
Glasgow Structural receives approved building warrant drawings and prepares structural drawings and SER certificate to support the building warrant process
Building warrant is granted
Work is undertaken
Glasgow Structural receives and checks design information from contractor or suppliers (Glazing, Timber roof trusses for example). Provided it is compliant, Glasgow Structural and provides another certificate to the local authority. Glasgow Structural provide detailed specifications to give clear guidance on design of these elements.
When all the work has been completed in accordance with building regulations the completion certificate can be signed.
